Woods Lake Goncourt is the kind of venue where the social side is part of the fishing. During our visit, we fished outwards from the island, with a shared lodge close by for food, charging and catching up with the group. A few days into the trip, Wayne and Foxy filmed this guide to explain the useful details we had discovered along the way.

This is our first-hand venue insight, recorded partway through a session. It is not the final catch report or a promise of how your week will fish. We have also checked selected booking and rule information against Domaine de Goncourt’s published pages on 6 October 2026.

Where is Woods Lake, and how do you book?

Woods Lake is part of Domaine de Goncourt in France. The current official listing describes a 20-acre exclusive-booking lake for up to seven anglers, approximately 3.5 hours from Calais. It lists four island swims, including two doubles, plus outside swims. Confirm how your group will be accommodated before booking.

The official page currently advertises exclusive bookings from £3,200. That is a starting figure, not a quote for your dates or group. Use the official Woods Lake availability and booking page to confirm the full price, inclusions and guest arrangements.

We found the venue straightforward to locate by searching for Woods Lake Goncourt in Google Maps. Use the arrival instructions in your booking confirmation for the correct entrance and check-in arrangements.

The island layout and choosing a swim

The central layout was a big part of the appeal for us. You can spend time together without feeling as though everyone is squeezed into the same piece of water. Wayne and Foxy felt the two double swims offered a substantial amount of water to work with.

Swim one

This was our double swim when we filmed. We found it comfortably spacious for two anglers, with room for our shelters and rod setups. It was the larger of the two doubles in our experience.

Swim four

We felt two anglers could fit here, although it was a tighter squeeze than swim one. Discuss shelter sizes and swim allocation with your group rather than assuming both doubles offer identical space.

The two singles

The single swims we described were directly in front of the social hub and closer to its facilities. That may suit anglers who want less walking between their setup and the lodge.

Agree your water

Before putting rods out, talk through the areas each angler will fish and ask staff about boundaries, snags and any current restrictions. A social layout works best when the group plans together.

Inside the social lodge

The shared hub was one of the best parts of the trip. On our visit it had Wi-Fi, a decent-sized TV, a large fridge, a freezer, a microwave and a kettle. There was also a dining table with chairs and a separate lounging area with a coffee table.

We brought a Fire TV Stick to watch football. If that matters to your group, check the current Wi-Fi arrangements, TV connections and your own streaming access before travelling; our experience is not a guarantee about connection quality on another week.

The light switch we struggled to find

In our video, the lodge light switch was on the side of the unit holding the microwave, beside the fridge. It is a small detail, but one that would have saved us searching around after arrival.

Charging, cooking and the outdoor space

We found plenty of sockets in the lodge. During the trip we ran an extension to our swim and used it with the portable fridge we had brought. The cable lengths mentioned in the video were estimates for that setup, not measurements for every swim.

Ask staff what electrical use is permitted before planning a cable run. Use equipment suitable for outdoor conditions, keep connections protected and avoid creating a trip hazard. The shared fridge and freezer may reduce how much extra kit your group needs to bring.

Outside, there was a large picnic bench and a substantial brick barbecue. We used the barbecue during the week and enjoyed sitting around the table for dinner. Ask about fuel, utensils and any current use restrictions when planning meals. Pizza was mentioned as a possible Friday option on our trip, so check whether it is available for your dates.

Toilets and showers: a short walk away

The toilet and shower facilities were off the island, a couple of minutes’ walk from our setup. We found a shower, a large sink and a toilet in a separate cubicle within the same small unit.

The shower’s on/off control caught us out: it was a lever above the shower head. We were happy with the flow and temperature during our stay, without having to adjust a temperature control.

Carp, grass carp and the catfish surprise

We had already caught some lovely fish when this insight was filmed on the Tuesday. The biggest carp reported at that point was a 50lb common. Grass carp featured heavily too: the group mentioned fish of 29lb, 35lb, 36lb and 40lb. Most of the early catches were commons or grass carp, with only one mirror in the tally discussed.

Those numbers describe that point in our week. They are not the final trip total, the current lake record or an expected catch rate for visitors.

The biggest surprise was the effort involved with the catfish. We were used to much smaller cats, and the powerful night-time runs led to snagged fish and lost rigs. Kingy’s dedicated catfish setup had been more successful. If you mainly fish for carp, talk to staff before arrival about handling large cats and the tackle required; do not assume an ordinary carp setup covers every situation.

Check the dedicated catfish rules

Domaine de Goncourt publishes separate requirements for catfish, including dedicated rods, a minimum 60-inch landing net and different tackle specifications for pellet/boilie and live/dead bait fishing. Read the full current carp and catfish rules and discuss your setup with staff before travelling.

Fish-care equipment, bait and boats

On our visit, mats and slings were supplied for carp and catfish, and we needed to bring nets. Confirm the equipment provided for your week and the net sizes required for the species you will target.

We ordered bait through the venue and were happy with it. The current rules only allow the complex’s own particles, ban nuts and shelf-life boilies, and require rods to be attended. Check permitted bait and quantities before ordering or packing.

Two rowing boats were available during our stay. The official rules require you to bring and wear your own life jacket whenever using a boat. Ask staff for guidance on boat use and snagged fish; the fact that boats are available does not make a difficult situation safe to tackle without help.

Our first-visit checklist

  • Confirm your group’s swim allocation, current inclusions and arrival instructions.
  • Plan shared meals around the lodge’s fridge, freezer, microwave and barbecue.
  • Check Wi-Fi and TV arrangements if you want to bring a streaming device.
  • Agree electrical use with staff before bringing extension equipment.
  • Read both carp and catfish rules, and bring suitable nets and life jackets.
  • Order permitted bait ahead and confirm which mats and slings are supplied.

The Fresh Fishing verdict

We were thoroughly enjoying Woods Lake when this guide was filmed. The central social space, comfortable double swim and useful facilities made it easy to spend a fishing week together. The large cats were the main part we had underestimated, so arriving prepared would make a real difference.

For us, its appeal was the combination of fishing and time with the group. Watch the venue insight above for the layout and facilities, then use the fishery’s current information to plan your own stay.
